The event was organised by Nazi student wing. As the books burnt, the students took oaths as they destroyed subversive and un-german literature and teachings. Why would you burn a book? Why would you go after intellect? What can a book do? Why is It so dangerous to you?
While the enlightened intelligentsia always seeks to liberate an individual from the constraints of history and from the yoke of traditional unproven beliefs, the fascists work on the contrary. All they do is to differentiate and divide people. They deny them reason.
The first thing every totalitarian regime does is mutilation of reality. Next comes confiscation of history and appropriation of culture. The main goal of an authoritarian regime is control, they don’t like free thought.
They don’t want their subjects to connect to undesirable (to the regime) parts of themselves and their past. The narrative is built around transmitting pseudo science and ideas and make people think that this is all there is. They manufacture history to suit their purposes.
It is to make masses think that what regime tells is the truth and that there are no other options. In a totalitarian regime, public opinion must be moulded to fit the narrative. Nazis approach to intellectuals was to dismiss them, they played no role.
Free press was silenced, as well as intellectuals. While the sane and free thinking world wanted a book shelf full of books with different school of thoughts, Nazis bookshelf was primarily Mein Kampf. Only the science, art and literature that benefitted the regime were allowed.
Intellectualism demands a society which is a marketplace of ideas and tolerates dissent. Place where people have ability to question authority with Independent thought. A place where people formulate rational ideas. Nazis were against everything among these.
In initial days when asked that how can a man as uneducated as Hitler rule the country the Nazis just retorted that education is immaterial when a ‘man’ has such a good persona and can deliver such fiery speeches. The propaganda said they needed 'men' of character, not of books.
In May 1933, Hitler was chancellor for just a couple of months and what did he target first? He targeted books. The Nazis burnt books everywhere in 34 german cities which had universities. But why would anyone burn books?
