Caste, especially its hereditary transmission has been a living reality of India, to this day. (In present day India, thanks to the divisive policies of many a dalit messianic leader, one cannot change his caste unless he changes his religion and bids adieu to the system itself.) In this scenario, one cannot circumvent the caste question howsoever unpalatable it might be…One perplexing nature of the caste system has been that even some of the greatest nationalistic stalwarts from Vivekananda, Aurobindo, and Gandhi have while criticizing the denigrated casteist structure maintained that the caste system was one of the foremost contributions of Indian civilization. posted by Azygos @ 6:46 PM
