He joins the chorus of postmodernists who have extensively criticized this concept. That use of “consciousness” is very different from what he seems to be speaking about in the excerpts, which is basically a translation of how nondual realization looks. I think it’s quite an articulate statement: “Finding Emptiness is a freedom from all perspectives (a nirvana free of samsara); a union with Form is finding the Fullness of perspectives that alone can express this Freedom (the nonduality of nirvana and samsara). Wisdom is transcending perspectives, compassion is embracing them all.” In other words, rising in altitude is transcending perspectives; accepting depth is embracing our perspectives.
