Three Myths People Love to Believe About English (I've debunked each in my books as well): English has twee collective nouns like a shrewdness of apes; languages get simpler over time because lazy speakers slur their vowels and consonants (but what about those lazy hearers?); Elizabethan English survives in Appalachia. nytimes.com/2026/08/06/opi…

Anthropology is, by far in my opinion, the single most important field for understanding human nature. Many people who make the 'anti-woke' critique here don't even read anthropology, are intellectually lazy, and looking for reasons to dismiss the field.
The reality is the ethnographic record should be of essential interest to anyone who wants to understand human nature. Evolutionary psychologists, behavioral geneticists, economists, archaeologists, etc all need ethnography: they don't know what traits are universal, they don't know if the underlying traits they are interested in manifest the same everywhere, they don't know how social processes influencing and influenced by such traits work around the world, etc. Many big claims in such fields may have strong ethnographic counter-examples or areas where ethnography increases nuance and points to important patterns which need to be engaged with.
Additionally, the great thing about ethnography is that even when theoretically bankrupt the empirical observations can be incredibly valuable. There is plenty of 19th and 20th century ethnography where the theories are total nonsense but are filled with essential first hand observations of long-gone societies which are timeless. So even some of the worst present day stuff plagued by ideological bias and bad theory can be useful.
I think the criticisms of cultural anthropology I mentioned above are true but exaggerated, sometimes in bad faith. I think cultural anthropologists could do themselves a favor by better reflecting on these sort of critiques of the field and not just dismissing them as bad faith culture war complaints (even though, as I said, sometimes they are).
