Prime Minister stood in meditation for a while before the Samadhi

Being a ‘window of French culture’, if I may use Jawaharlal Nehru’s famous words, Puducherry occupies a special place in our country. I am truly delighted to come to this historic city which became the home of one of India’s great spiritual thinkers Sri Aurobindo.

Earlier, the Prime Minister visited the more than 400-year-old Manakula Vinayakar temple, where he was received with temple honours. He also visited Aurobindo Ashram and stood in meditation for a while before the memorials (Samadhis) of Sri Aurobindo and his spiritual collaborator The Mother (Mirra Alfasa). The Ashram was established by Sri Aurobindo on Nov 1926 with just a few disciples staying with him. He continued his spiritual work and later handed over responsibility of the Sadhaks (spiritual aspirants) and the Ashram to The Mother. The Prime Minister was accompanied by Lt Governor Iqbal Singh, among others.

He encouraged men of the stature of B.R. Ambedkar, Aurobindo Ghosh and Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan at the beginning of their careers. A year before Sayajirao ...

'All employees are considered members of one family, sharing bonds of mutual trust, support, responsibility and respect.' In the latter part of his life, Mehta moved to Pondicherry in devotion of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram.

The concept of Swadeshi is more than 100 years old. It was a guiding force for the Indian freedom struggle under the visionary leadership of Lokmanya Tilak, Veer Savarkar, Sri Aurobindo and Mahatama Gandhi.

This teaching has been wisely eliminated from all history books. Nor does any book talk about how likes of Swami Vivekananda, Bankim Chandra, Sri Aurobindo helped revive the ideologies of Hindutva which played a pivotal roled in unification of India. Consequences of these is this that today atheists have mushroomed. Now, these atheists do not get bothered if someone offends their ancestors. 9:56 PM

Giving the final blow, Jethmalani concluded by saying, "Your occupying the august office will be a disgrace to the republic of India." Referring to names like Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Swami Vivekananda, Chittaranjan Das and Sri Aurobindo ...

We all are now facing a huge battle

We all are now facing a huge battle as a result of Peter's writing. It should not have happened. Followers of the Mother and Sri Aurobindo are observing a special collective meditation everyday at 8:30 pm - 8:45 pm, wherever they are.
This will be a regular feature and yet another golden chance for us everyday to collectively connect ourselves to the Mother and Sri Aurobindo on this issue. Even in Ashram a section of people have started it.
Friends in Pune, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Madurai, Orissa, Bangalore and other places have been informed. You can inform your other friends as well.
Om Anadamayi Chaitanyamayi Satyamayi Parame.
Om Namo Bhagavate Sri Aravindaya.
Om Aayahi Satya Aavirbhava.
Victory to the Divine Mother.
Sincerely
Param and Ojasi

R: June 26, 2012 6:26 PM 2. Secondly, even when the Mother and Sri Aurobindo were present, they themselves have acknowledged the fact that the Ashram was a representative figure of the whole world. In other words, there were many sadhaks representing the world outside. So?
It is also to be noted that the majority of the persons coming nowadays, are coming, only to have a job and a comfortable living. No intention of sadhana, let alone the Integral Yoga.
We have observed the gradual deterioration in the atmosphere after the passing of the Mother. Even Mother has made damaging remarks about the Ashram, in the Agenda.
So where does that leave us? Of course, we can shout from the roof tops that the aim of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram is the Integral Yoga. But what is the ground reality?
Complex situation, to say the least.

Tweets 1h - Adam Kotsko @adamkotsko Finally: Zizek is more like the radical right than the radical left! I felt it coming.... 1h Zizek refers to quantum physics! Sokal alert! (No word on if the reference is actually wrong, though.)

The post-structuralists provided me with weapons to dissolve the essentialist identities the fascists defended in their attacks on women, the queer, minorities, etc.  Modeled on Marx’s analysis of commodity fetishism in Capital, the task of critical theory and post-structuralism was to show how all these purported “natural” identities and differences were really socially produced fetishes that need to be demolished in the name of the freedom to create oneself (Foucault’s care of the self, Butler’s performativity) and in the name of a communist egalitarianism.  Psychoanalysis as refracted through Lacan and Deleuze and Guattari’s schizoanalysis provided the tools to show why we libidinally become attached to such sad and harrowing social structures.  Marx provided a basic framework for how “the judgments of the earth” take place, stratifying and hierarchializing social relations through a play of ideologies, machines, resources, and flows of capital.  And always, lurking in the background, was the Spinozist project of joy, of sorority and fraternity, rather than Oedipus, sovereignity, or authority…  Always there’s the dream of transversal social production out of groups on a flat and egalitarian plane, rather than centralized aborescence.  Brothers and sisters as a conspiracy against the Father.
All of this remains at the core of my passions, yet there was nonetheless a disquiet.  If Marx’s analysis of commodity fetishism was the elementary schema, the master-key, of all critical theory and analysis, what was I to do with my love of all nonhuman living things, of the inorganic world, of meteorology, astronomy, geology, and all the rest? …  As I reflect on my own journey, I find myself thinking that critical theory, in treating Marx’s analysis of commodity fetishism, repeats the central sin of capitalism… In treating all things as fetishes to be decoded and debunked, I have not practiced lassen sein, because I reduce, for example, the animal to a social construction, to social positionality, in a system of signs or signifiers.
Rather than letting the octopus be for itself, I instead treat it as a cultural text.  I turn it into something else, a social text, rather than approaching it as a divergent series, another possible world, that departs from ours while also taking up a point of view on ours.  And in doing this, I repeat the elementary attitude of human exceptionalism and capitalist production, where all things that exist are things that are there for us, rather than for themselves.  I treat all things as things to be exploited and used.  I write alienation and exploitation into the heart of ontology.

Foucault's use of episteme has been asserted as being similar to Thomas Kuhn's notion of a paradigm, as for example by Jean Piaget.[2] … Kuhn's and Foucault's notions are both influenced by the French philosopher of science Gaston Bachelard's notion of an "epistemological rupture", as indeed was Althusser. More recently, Judith Butler used the concept of episteme in her book Excitable Speech, examining the use of speech-act theory for political purposes.
Feyerabend described science as being essentially anarchistic, obsessed with its own mythology, and as making claims to truth well beyond its actual capacity. He was especially indignant about the condescending attitudes of many scientists towards alternative traditions… According to Feyerabend, new theories came to be accepted not because of their accord with scientific method, but because their supporters made use of any trick – rational, rhetorical or ribald – in order to advance their cause… One of the criteria for evaluating scientific theories that Feyerabend attacks is the consistency criterion. He points out that to insist that new theories be consistent with old theories gives an unreasonable advantage to the older theory. [From Wikipedia]

Ned sees, Heehs ceases

Tweets 20m - Mihir Jha @Mihirkumarjha - @PMOIndia shall visit Sri Aurobindo's Samadhi to seek blessings but will do nothing to save his legacy. Why then pay homage on his Samadhi? 26m Dear @PMoIndia, why r u going 2 pay Homage at Sri Aurobindo's Samadhi when u cudnt send Peter Heehs back to US?

It was our good fortune to have had Ned contribute here over the years and to have had her provide some of our most insightful commentaries. Her star was in the ascendent, her trajectory was toward a prodigious future when suddenly her soul opened to the "world of light". "A kind and lovely maiden culling flowers" In a sweet garden fresh with vernal showers, This is the thing you fear, young portress bright "Who opens to our souls the worlds of light."

In contrast, Peter Heehs, after staying in the Ashram as an inmate for long 40 years, could not come to this simple realisation, yet. This speaks enough about the muddled and mischievous mind of Peter Heehs, and reflects heavily on the quality and contents of his infamous book. Posted by H Acharya to Savitri Era Open Forum at 10:04 PM, June 24, 2012

H Acharya has left a new comment on your post "Sri Aurobindo's disagreements with Mahatma Gandhi ...": Mr. Joy should, first of all, understand that Sri Aurobindo is not a common man like him and others, but a great and uncommon yogi and spiritual leader, who did intense sadhana for long years to bring down a new Power for the evolutionary needs of the mankind: an Avataric work. Such a person does not need the type of crude investigation tried in Peter’s book. Moreover, Sri Aurobindo himself had categorically advised against trying to write his biography, since the essential elements of it are not on the surface to see. The mischievous mind of Peter Heehs, under influence of his US conspirators, have naturally tried to work like gutter inspectors, and in the process, distorted every event towards his own dirty conclusions, (in the name of humanising him!). Hence, this book is highly detestable and despicable from end to end, whatever the so-called pseudo-intellectuals like Mr, Joy, or others, have to say about it. Posted by H Acharya to Savitri Era Open Forum at 8:42 PM, June 27, 2012

Any discussion of Hägglund’s work must address the question of “desire,” but in this immediate context, I think Nietzsche’s reflection on the desire of philosopers in Beyond Good and Evil is relevant. There he argues that underneath all the argumentation and conceptual work, there lies a motivating desire. Nietzsche being Nietzsche, he of course glosses it as a will to power, which is probably reductive — yet the notion of reading philosophers in terms of “what they want” seems to me to be sound. Caputo wants to use deconstruction to save religion from itself, he wants to have a “religion without religion” free from all the historical baggage of violence…
I want to be able to talk about religion without apologizing for so-called “religious violence,” because it seems to me that all of human history, in every one of its aspects, is violent — family, economy, nation, use of resources… (And that stance is incidentally something I find in Agamben, which is partly why I am finding his work increasingly important for my own thought.)

Puducherry, June 27 (PTI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will arrive here on June 29 on a two-day visit to the Union Territory. Singh would attend a function in the Pondicherry University on June 29 and on the next day visit the Aurobindo Ashram and participate in the convocation of premier medical institution JIPMER here, official sources said today. After arriving here by helicopter from Chennai, Singh, on his first visit to the former French colony, would proceed to the Pondicherry University and dedicate to the nation the Madanjeet Singh Institute of South Asia Regional Cooperation.
On June 30, he would visit the 86-year old Aurobindo Ashram and pay homage at the `samadhis` (memorials) of Sri Aurobindo and his spiritual collaborator The Mother. The Prime Minister would also visit the room where Sri Aurobindo carried out his spiritual experiments for several years. Sri Aurobindo breathed his last in December 1950 while The Mother (Mirra Alfasa) passed away in November 1973. Lt Governor Dr Iqbal Singh today visited the ashram to oversee the arrangements for the Prime Minister`s visit.

Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a spiritual organisation, the priority for anybody given the power must be determined by his spiritual capacity, his relationship with the Divine, his or her commitment to fulfill the Divine's work. The number of years one has been there is important but more important is the sincerity, the straight forwardness, the simplicity and the intensity to make the Ashram work. The individual's capacity to represent the Divine's work. All those who have this living link should be given the representative positions. This will bring in the safety for the Ashram and avoid the misuse of power and position for personal gain, importance or rule. At present the Departmental Heads may be in power because of their relation with Manoj and not with the Divine. In the Ashram the work behind the appearance of all activity is that of and for the supramental descent, so that being the real work and as the current  management is not representing the Trusteeship, new management has to come
A question does arise as how to measure the spiritual level of the candidate, as we have sadhaks who are genuinely doing the sadhana and there are those who are genuinely showing others that they are doing the sadhana.  But as the consciousness of the individual does not lie, the truth can be easily detected and the fake eliminated. And the ones who are not spiritually active as some of them claim openly, they should not qualify for any Ashram management.
Some such ground rules can be laid, and age too can be given a priority, as for the right functioning of the job at hand. We are here to be ever young but that does not mean that what we cannot do ourselves anymore, we will still continue working in the same job even when we have become unfit for quality functioning.  All fitness coaches who are in the grounds must be fit and pass a basic fitness level themselves, all teachers must have their standards of qualifications. Every position in work and management must have a right training attached to it to ensure the right workings and functionality worth of the Mother's and Sri Aurobindo's name. A quality working control group can be formed to ensure the high standards are maintained and improved....  All are disciples and seekers for the Truth, and should be treated with respect, kindness and love. The young and sincere should be given the opportunities to do the Divine's work. Sunil

Jitender, stop pretending that you are in any way serving the Divine!
Just how can you separate the two issues?– Peter’s mischief and the Trustee’s unstinted support to him. Do you have to be reminded that Peter’s extension of visa was given on the recommendation of the Ashram trustees only? So your war cry that ‘I will fight tooth and nail’ is all bogus.
People like yourself who are supporting the present set of trustees are only making use of moral and yogic ideas to conceal their personal motives. Instead of serving the Divine you are only serving your own violent egoism. This is no longer even self-deception: it’s sheer hypocrisy!
The present set of trustees have only been misconducting themselves, are egoistical, unfaithful , treacherous. What all they have been doing all these years is cloaking everything with a favorable appearance, giving all movements a favorable explanation. But it has been so flagrant that it can fool nobody but themselves!
So, when a Peter denigrates Sri Aurobindo in his own Ashram he is given all possible support, he is even welcomed back to the Archives!
And when one Radhikaranjan stands for Sri Aurobindo, he is thrown out of his job!
This is the war of the Gods and Titans, the symbol of which the old Indian literature is full. The present trustees are the incarnations of the Titanic powers, they are Asuras. Who shall win in the end in this struggle between Dharma and Adharma, well, you very well know it!

Does Sri Aurobindo’s Poetry Stand the Test of Critics and Time? from: Jitendra Sharma aurofrance@gmail.com date: 26 June 2012 22:23 (Sri Aurobindo to Dilip. Ed. Sujata Nahar and Shankar Bandopadhyay. Pune and Mysore; HariKrishna Mandir Trust and Mira Aditi. V-2.p.100)
Not only the Western critics took an adverse view of Sri Aurobindo’s poetic works, some Indian poets and critics like P. Lal and Nissim Ezekiel, following their trail, criticised and disapproved of his creations. One of Sri Aurobindo’s followers, poet and critic, K. D. Sethna, amply replied them…
In only 10 pages we get so many intriguing things that it casts a doubt as to how many such gems are scattered in almost all the other pages of the book to so greatly represent Sri Aurobindo before the enthusiastic public… © Aju Mukhopadhyay, 2011

[The Week | Up close and personal By Ajish P. Joy BOOK REVIEW: Monday, June 25, 2012 14:29 hrs IST Heehs, though in respectful tones, questions the divinity of Aurobindo and the claim that he possessed supernatural powers. The book records Aurobindo's famous disagreements with his contemporaries like Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore. The book attempts a critical evaluation of Aurobindo. It is comprehensive, empirical, historically accurate and a formidable piece of scholarship. Though his followers may disagree, the book manages to humanise Aurobindo for the common man.]

Morarji Desai, Jai Prakash Narayan, and Minoo Masani

Sri Aurobindo Ashram - Sri Aurobindo Ashram Home > E-Library > Works Of Sri Aurobindo > English > Cwsa > Autobiographical Notes > Private Letters To Public Figures 1948 1950 On the Communist Movement
September 19, 1950
Naturally I am in agreement with the views expressed about Communism in the Manifesto,7 but before associating myself fully with Masani's organisation and his movement I will have to wait and see how it develops in the field of practical politics.
For similar reasons I might expect you as editor of M.I. to wait and see and in that case it would be logical to withhold your signature while expressing your sympathy with the movement. Whatever is done must be something strong and effective, a blow that can tell; otherwise, the Communist movement has become so powerful that it can feed upon the shocks one tries to give it as one can see in the tussle that is going on in the UNO. As to Desai's objections, it seems to me that if any movement of the kind is made it would be worth while to make it as widely representative as possible and in that case the Socialists like Jai Prakash who distrust and are opposed to Communism would have to be included. There is such a thing as social democracy which need not be confused with Communism as it has its own more manageable standpoints: of course I agree with Desai as regards our standing on the side of Western democracies.

On the Communist Movement. On 13 September 1950, Swatantra Party leader Minoo Masani sent Sethna a draft of an anti-Communist tract entitled "Manifesto for the Defence of Democracy and Independence in Asia". He asked Sethna: "Do you think Sri Aurobindo would consider signing the manifesto? Do try." Later, at a private meeting, Masani told Sethna, "I would be very happy if Sri Aurobindo saw the manifesto and made his suggestions. They would indeed be valuable." On 16 September, Sethna sent Masani's letter and the draft manifesto to Sri Aurobindo, along with a letter of his own in which he noted: "The Manifesto is meant to rally the largest possible support to the anti-Communist front and it studiously avoids open or direct siding with the Western powers." He added that even socialist leader Jai Prakash Narayan was thinking of signing it. On the other hand, Morarji Desai, with whom Masani had spoken, was opposed to getting the signatures of men like Narayan, as they were, he said, "not really democratic". Desai "was strongly in favour of declaring our adherence to the western democracies". In closing his letter, Sethna asked Sri Aurobindo for his views. Sri Aurobindo's answer, reproduced here, was drafted on 19 September 1950.

Sri Aurobindo Ashram CURRENT POLITICAL, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC IDEAS1
Sri Aurobindo is in no way bound by the present world's institutions or current ideas whether in political, social or economic field; it is not necessary for him either to approve or disapprove of them. He does not regard either capitalism or orthodox socialism as the right solution for the world's future; nor can he admit that the admission of private enterprise by itself makes the society capitalistic, a socialistic economy can very well admit some amount of controlled or subordinated private enterprise as an aid to its own working or a partial convenience without ceasing to be socialistic. Sri Aurobindo has his own views as to how far Congress economy is intended to be truly socialistic or whether that is only a cover, but he does not care to express his views on that point at present. 15-4-1949 [1:09 PM]

The purpose of this article is not to cast aspersions on Gandhi – rather, it is to damn those who are more comfortable with rote learning and uncritical parroting of ideas of which they understand little rather than positing genuine solutions, of posturing rather than proffering.

The Mother has endowed you with the power of eloquence

Nehdia Sameen says: Posted on Feb 10, 2008 9:11:37 AM PST Permalink
I think the reviewer is merely pointing out the dangers of "mental idolatory", which is a very real possibility with two spiritual giants like Sri Aurobindo and the Mother (of whom I consider myself a devotee). The fact of the matter is that anything we might say about their occult activities is pure mental speculation until we also become fully conscious of our divinity.
Writes V. Chidanandam: 'A certain person wanted to publish a magazine and sought Sri Aurobindo's advice. Sri Aurobindo was reported to have said to him, "What is it you want to publish? your ignorance?"' ;-) By all means, people ought to publish what they know about Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, but with the awareness that they are publishing their ignorance for the most part. ;-)
It is also true that Sri Aurobindo and the Mother never made a big deal about their significant occult abilities. As Sri Aurobindo notes: "Great saints have performed miracles; greater saints have railed at them; the greatest have both railed at them and performed them."
Nevertheless, this book is useful if one wants to piece together the details of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother's lives, and view them in the larger context of what was going on in the 20th century, with the caveat that mental speculation is no substitute for spiritual realization. And Georges van Vrekhem is an excellent writer and had access to a lot of information about these two spiritual teachers.

The Lives of Sri Aurobindo: Some devotees of Sri Aurobindo might be put off by Peter’s academic tone in this biography. After all, he never calls Sri Aurobindo an “avatar” or anything like that in it. Indeed, Peter paints Sri Aurobindo as humanly as he possibly can in this biography (which was partly because he wanted a university publisher in order to reach a wider audience, and partly because that’s his style — to be measured and detached) ... Peter Heehs’ The Lives of Sri Aurobindo from The Stumbling Mystic by ned 8:40 AM 11:17 AM Lives war: 2007 - 2011

Indeed, Tusar, I'm in complete agreement with you. There just has not been anyone in history who comes even close to Sri Aurobindo and the Mother in terms of their vast vision. I would say they are the only truly integrally realized avatars to have graced this planet.

Thanks Ned for expressing the obvious, which as you have observed in a number of online forums, people are reluctant to accept. Alan and you, of course, invariably insist on the experience aspect of the Integral Yoga and that is certainly the most important facet; but a general appreciation in respect of The Mother and Sri Aurobindo is sorely missing, and that is not going to improve as long as we the followers remain ambivalent.
You must, further, have realized that the opposition to The Mother and Sri Aurobindo arises out of a concerted resistance that has neither any intellectual rigour nor democratic ethos. So, it is only apparent that we too face them with comparable means. I am happy to spot you after a long silence as The Mother has endowed you with the power of eloquence. Let’s strive to be her instrument in the best possible way and the victory will be ours.
