True religious harmony on a national scale

Hindu-Muslim Unity & Sri Aurobindo 

Dr. Mangesh Nadkarni was one of the most senior and respected members and scholars of Sri Aurobindo and his philosophy.

In a talk delivered to the annual convention of Sri Aurobindo Society held at Pondicherry on 13th August 1994 Dr. Nadkarni analysed the problem of Hindu-Muslim unity in the light of Sri Aurobindo's thought. Here's a gist. 

'Sri Aurobindo saw this as a  national but not as a political problem and cautioned us against adopting an overly political or sentimental approach to it. According to him Mother India has given a permanent place in her bosom to the Mohemmedan and therefore the identity of our religious minorities should be safeguarded. 

Hinduism should show to the world the way to a true religious harmony on a national scale. This calls for a more dynamic, more world-affirming Hinduism, strong enough to conciliate Islam. Hinduism has to learn to face the challenge of fundamentalism without either pampering for imitating it. This calls for a truly spiritual approach and the true love of a patriot."

All true patriots must seriously ponder over the deep significance of this thought. 

It would also be extremely good to read and digest the message Sri Aurobindo sent to a free India on 15th August 1947, also his birthday.

Aurovilian Pioneer Frederick, 85 years old, among the first to be admitted as an Aurovilian by the Mother, faces visa denial and must leave India after dedicating over 60 years to Auroville, the Mother’s Dream.

Frederick came to Pondicherry and the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in 1960 for the first time and for good in 1966. He was among the first to be admitted as an Aurovilian by the Mother and worked closely with her on Auroville matters in its early years. He has continued to live in and give his life to her Dream for over 60 years.

Over those years he has been a friend to many in and around Auroville as well as across India and the world, and he has dedicated himself wholeheartedly to Auroville.

We are deeply dismayed that an 85 year old pioneering resident is now being prevented from completing his life in Auroville after having given everything that he has and is to this unique and special project of the Mother.

We humbly appeal to the relevant authorities to reconsider the denial of visa extension and request to leave India that has been issued to Frederick (Schulze-Buxloh) so that this child of the Mother is allowed to remain in India, which he calls the country of his soul.

Auroville design had a pavilion for India including a pavilion for each state. The construction of India pavilion was started by the Mother in 1971. But since the govt. of India took over Auroville in 1980, just one state pavilion has been established!  @narendramodi @dpradhan

Auroville is within India and has to operate within the framework of the Indian Constitution. The Indian courts have adjudicated. The RA has no constitutional basis. So feel ashamed instead for lolling over acres and acres of land for the few.

The RA is not above the law. Auroville is not above the Indian Constitution. The governing board is not below the RA. The RA should refute on fact on what basis is the development being blocked on a plan approved decades ago. The RA keeps which aspect of the Mother's vision when it blocks the plan. Don't come up with apeals to authority you know very well quote against quote is the easiest thing to counter. Grow up. Stop stalling development.

Kireet Joshi’s (who was deeply involved in drafting and formulating the Auroville Foundation Act of 1988) quote suggests that the Governing Board cannot override the residents’ autonomy in decision-making, including development plans, as long as they adhere to the Charter. The Residents’ Assembly (RA), is meant to represent the people’s voice in Auroville’s organization. The Indian Constitution and the Governing Board hold legal authority, but Joshi’s interpretation of the Act implies that delaying development in the name of collaboration aligns with Auroville’s foundational principles of resident-led governance, not obstruction. If the approved plan from decades ago conflicts with the current residents’ vision or the Charter, the RA’s collaborative process takes precedence over unilateral imposition by the Board.

Attended the Prize Distribution of the Sri Aurobindo Annual History Essay Competition 2024-25, organised by the Foundation for Indian Historical and Cultural Research (FIHCR), led by Historian and Author Shri @vikramsampath.

The competition received over 1,500 entries from 300+ schools across the country. Was truly heartening to see the clarity of thought and civilisational confidence in the essays of our young minds.

In their work, the children highlighted the efforts of Unsung Hero's of Indian Freedom Struggle such as Ahilyabai Holkar, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Bagha Jatin and Rani Gaidinliu among many others.

Appreciate Dr Vikram Sampath and his team for leading such initiatives, such are vital in awakening pride and awareness in our youth.

The level of deception by the Auroville Foundation is unimaginable. How can an organization meant to foster unity and truth sink so low?

The removal of a resident's post on Auroville's forum "Auronet" for sharing an article in The Hindu— calling for at least two senior residents on the Governing Board— reveals the daily persecutions Auroville residents endure. This suppression of voices, amidst ongoing tensions over land deals and governance, endangers the community's core values. 

Anu omits that the Auroville Foundation has censored residents from posting in "News and Notes" and Auronet, silencing dissident voices. Oh, how noble of them to "protect" Auroville by ensuring no one can speak against their actions—truly the spirit of a utopia! This is the true danger to Auroville. Demand transparency!

Wrong mindsets are dangerous. Excessive expectations are even more dangerous.

Before anything else, each person must engage in an inner search to understand exactly why they are coming to Auroville.

The idea of a community expanding into a city is full of challenges and (1) demands hard and consistent work. Auroville was never meant to be just for 3,500 people. It was never meant to be a small community in a green area, behind fences and high borders, separated from the rest of the world, without laws, and simply offering a fun and easy life. (2) It seems that some people live in a fantasy world and are unaware of the realities of this world.

Dear ones who come from other countries, how can you so easily label a creation of such purity?

A bit of humility, a bit of gratitude toward the creators of Auroville is deserved (3) Spiritual life has never been easy, and in today’s world, it is harder than ever.

I do. A person can have disagreements with another person, yet she can revere him for the right reasons. He was the first to speak about nationalism and inspired the likes of savarkar and aurobindo. He was a journalist who ferociously spoke against the tyrrany for bureaucracy. And got jailed for that very reason. He chose jail at the cost of his health when he was given the option of release in return for quitting the work he was doing. He denied doing so.

To set the record straight, the "elderly woman scientist" you refer to holds an influential administrative position but does not have the backing of the Auroville Residents' Assembly. She has disregarded our collective will, actively persecuting and disrupting the lives of many residents, taking away livelihoods, and undermining the very essence of our community. We've asked her to resign.

You claim that the community obstructs development, but it's the administration that has bypassed the Residents' Assembly, the heart of Auroville's unity and decision-making process. The recent construction projects, including roads, were undertaken without necessary community consent or environmental assessments, leading to the destruction of Auroville's natural assets and the ethos it stands for. Let's be clear: the majority of Auroville residents do not support this takeover and "development".

We are for development. The Dreamweaving project showcased Auroville's collaborative spirit. Ironically, it was halted by this administration, which now accuses us of obstruction. We have tried to collaborate.

Your attempt to divide the community along nationalistic lines is not only unhelpful but deeply contrary to Auroville's core principle of bringing people together in unity, regardless of nationality. Sri Aurobindo's philosophy, particularly his interpretation of Sanatana Dharma, is one of inclusivity and universality, focusing on a spiritual evolution that transcends national, cultural, or religious identities.

It's deeply ironic that you advocate for peace when your administration is accused of actions that undermine Auroville's vision, resorting to coercive tactics like visa threats to silence opposition. Cutting financial support, including maintenance stipends and the Silver Fund for the elderly, shows a lack of respect for our community's most vulnerable members. Additionally, you've forcibly removed residents from their workspaces, exacerbating the crisis.

We also have videos, and what they would show is that there was no threat or violence during our gathering. However, they don't capture the full picture of the systematic undermining of Auroville's self-governance, the disrespect towards its elders, and the environmental degradation that has occurred under your watch.

Auroville was built on the ideals of collaboration, sustainability, and spiritual growth - not on division, coercion, or exclusion. It's time for TRUTH, open dialogue, and a return to the path of unity and respect that defines Auroville.

Update: 'Planting' by the AVFO: "For each tree cut, 10 will be planted." -NGT Directive

In Dec 2023, several large Kayas from the Gaia crossing were 'prepared for transplantation' as the road was ripped apart. A recent visit to the transplantation site in Edayanchavadi revealed they are all dead.

On 6 Nov 2022, 3 young trees were planted by the AVFO, including the Secretary, at Swagatham Guest House. None of these exist anymore.

A 'plantation drive' was planned by the AVFO on 6th April, 2023 at the YC stretch with a large gathering of people, and a lot of media. About 5 young Barringtonia asiatica trees were planted (Mother's name: Supramental Action). 1 is dead, the rest barely survive.

In Feb 2022, all along the revelation fence, the same species of young trees were planted. Not a single one can be seen today.

Over a hundred trees of various species were cut in Darkali and the Crown road under the pretext of transplantation to comply with the NGT ruling at the time. Only 20-30 Service trees survive.

They might promote their personal insights as universal truths, potentially leading followers down paths that are not beneficial or true to other spiritual traditions or personal needs.

Inauthenticity: Spiritual ego can lead to inauthentic behaviors where one might act or speak in ways that seem spiritually advanced but are not genuinely felt or believed. This can include using spiritual jargon without understanding or living by its true meaning, which can be alienating or manipulative.

Building this Outer Ring Road was never approved by the Residents Assembly of Auroville. The road is part of the outdated "Perspective Master Plan 2025" from 2001. The required Detailed Development Plans and Environmental Impact Assessments were never carried out for this section of road.

  There is a highly functional existing paved road that runs parallel to this new road only 50 meters away! There are many ways to adjust the road and cutting such a precious tree was absolutely unnecessary. 

  The Secretary of the Auroville Foundation, IAS @JayantiRavi, is pushing through the controversial construction of the Master Plan road network. The construction is contracted to the Central Public Works Department @CPWD.
