Home minister P Chidambaram is unlikely to reverse
the order rejecting US
historian and author of The Lives of Sri Aurobindo, Peter Heehs’ visa.
Government sources said the Puducherry Foreigner Regional Registration
Officer’s decision on the historian’s visa had more to do with violations
of norms than his intellectual work.
“Heehs’ visa had expired last year, but was allowed
to continue staying in India
pending disposal of his representation,” a government source said. “It is not
as simple a case as it has been made out to be.” Heehs was told to leave India before
April 15 after considering the views of the state governments and security agencies. [Posted by General Editor at 4/04/2012 07:34:00 AM]

Economics Journal: Should India Relax its Visa Rules? Wall
Street Journal (blog) April 4, 2012, 9:00 AM IST By Rupa Subramanya
“So Eurowailers, Ameriwhiners, I hope you have a
tough time getting an Indian visa; I have always had a tough time getting
yours.” So tweeted Indian
writer Jerry Pinto late last week. The feisty Mr. Pinto was reacting to a column
by writer and politician Shashi Tharoor, who was arguing that India ’s
bureaucratic and unfriendly visa procedures were damaging its image abroad.
In a
related vein, historian and journalist Ramachandra Guha on Monday went to
bat for American historian Peter Heehs. Mr. Heehs, a noted specialist on the
philosopher and mystic Sri Aurobindo, was at the time of writing in danger of
being kicked out of India
after nearly 40 years here. Fortunately for Mr. Heehs he has friends in high
places. A distinguished group of writers and politicians, including Union
Minister Jairam Ramesh, wrote to Home Minister P. Chidambaram asking for a review
of his case. With such high powered support it seems unlikely that Mr. Heehs
will in fact be deported. The case raises many difficult questions. The fact
that some devotees found Mr. Heehs’s work “blasphemous”
is at the root of his current difficulties. But at least he has powerful allies…
Even the U.S.
and Canada ,
possibly the two most integrated economies in the world, with a shared history
and culture, have recently tightened controls at their borders rather than
loosening them as many economists have been urging for decades. Should national
borders be loosened? Economics points one way, politics and security another. Rupa

[SBICitizen] It feels so rejuvenating to think of a society where
every individual is healthy, educated and aware, positive-thinking, full of
energy and “gung-ho” spirit. But in its place we have created a society of
rigid hierarchies, fossilized divisions between those who live in 15-storie

Sandeep April 2, 2012 at 11:49 am stumbling mystic: It’s hard for me to understand why someone who was
educated in England, had exposure to the progressive movements, must have
interacted with liberated Englishwomen, and whose parents were not traditional
Hindus but atheists, would come back to India and have a really conventional
traditional marriage to a woman who was half his age (he was 28, she was 14).
You are making several assumptions in this passage.
It is not known if he had any exposure to liberated Englishwomen. In fact,
women were not admitted to King’s College until 1972! See http://www.kings.cam.ac.uk/archive-centre/college-archives/constructing.html
“The
twentieth anniversary of women’s admission in 1992 was also celebrated with a
seminar which looked forward to a greater role for women in the College and
outside, as well as recollecting the past.”
Even if Sri Aurobindo wanted to marry an Indian
woman of his age and education, he would not have found one because they would
all have been married. In Hindu society a hundred years ago, it was considered
abnormal and inauspicious to have an unmarried daughter in the house past the
age of fourteen.
