Stagnation in the Ashram and the chaos in Auroville


[Integration and harmonisation of the consciousness-being] can only come about when in your consciousness you create that cosmos, when you establish that Point which is the new base of life that Sri Aurobindo described. For that an entirely new dimension of the psychic realisation has to come into being. And that is the focus of my work. You see, until 1971 nothing was really known of all this. But let us look at the facts: in 1970 the Mother completed her work in terms of dealing with DETAILS within the parameters prescribed for her Incarnation. The original plan of the Temple was the proof that this firstordering had taken place and that her Yoga had made that possible. The City is the physical representation of that Cosmos, which is ‘held together’ by the Temple, which, in turn, is that central Point, the core-point of the cosmos that ‘holds it together’. In this light you can understand quite easily why the actual shape of Auroville was designed by the original architect as a galaxy, and how perfectly accurate that was. The only problem with the physical reality that is the Auroville we know is that there is no central Point that is capable of ‘holding the city-consciousness together’. Hence there is only chaos there as a result. But this was no fault of the Mother, insofar as she did give the key to the true foundation of the City. And here we have used that key in our work, with accurate and measurable results.

A further point is that the Matrimandir was described as ‘the soul’ of the City. And this provides another clue to the process I am describing. You see, as stated, when you are dealing with matter this question of DETAIL comes to the fore. At the same time, when dealing with matter the question of the soul’s role is immediately introduced, because the soul is the nexus of being in material creation.

Now with this you can perhaps begin to draw certain important correlations: the soul, the Individual Divine, the Third member of the Solar Line, the Temple, the question of ‘perfection in detail’. All of this begins to make very logical and coherent sense. We understand fully why the Descent was arranged the way it has been and why, at this stage, we are faced with the question of Measure in the first place, why the Mother insisted on ‘accurate measurements’ and that she wanted ‘only an engineer’ and not an architect because accuracy was of the utmost importance. And we also realise why this was so hotly combated in Auroville: we are dealing with the ‘mire of detail’ in this issue. It is like the city of New York: from above it is clean and pristine and an exquisite creation of man; but when we descend we see the other side, and we may be appalled. The same applies to the City and the Temple. In the plan stage these were impeccable creations; the Mother’s original plan of the Chamber is unparalleled, it is a perfect cosmos and a replica of the Soul in Matter as the binding nexus of a material creation.

But when in the process of bringing that perfect Vision into the material plane – that is, in EXECUTING the plans the Mother left – then we are confronted with those unpleasant facts which we would rather ignore: the murkiness of the detail, with all the knots that have come into being in this material plane because Supermind has not been the overt ruling Principle in creation. This can explain why the work of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother and our present contribution is always so entangled, so difficult, so obstructed. We are working through those knots in the course of our collective endeavour. There is no ‘sunlit path’ here; there is only one direction. And that is through the entire wheel and all its various ‘points’. Precisely because we are dealing with an INTEGRAL REALISATION. …

JANUARY 24, 2010 In short, the entire “court diary” is a fabrication. We feel it is important to make this clear, since this “diary” continues the pattern of rumor, misinformation, and outright lies that have been used to smear Peter Heehs, especially in relation to the legal cases brought against his book The Lives of Sri Aurobindo.

The fact that Surekha Jain is the petitioner shows the connection between this Writ Petition and the previous ones. Surekha Jain is the mother of Geetanjali J Bhattacharjee, also known as Geetanjali JB, who is the petitioner in a Writ Petition filed in the Orissa High Court in October 2008. In 2008 Geetanjali JB claimed to be a resident of Balasore, Orissa, although she actually lives with her husband, Jayant Bhattacharjee and her mother Surekha in Chennai.

Jayant Bhattacharjee has long been a friend of Sraddhalu Ranade. Ranade denies knowledge or involvement in the court cases (or such falsifications as this “diary”), but his ongoing denials are questionable. He was one of the first to call for legal action in 2008, had been in direct contact with one of the lawyers, and has been a strong supporter of legal action. Since Ranade’s friends are the persons bringing repeated legal cases, the natural assumption is that they are doing it with his approval, if not participation.

The most disturbing aspect of the current legal case (and this “diary”) is that it appears to be directed at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, as well as Peter Heehs. […]

Hearing on 21st December 2009
It is important to note that by listing Manoj Das Gupta as a “respondent” in the Writ, those who are pressing this legal harassment of Heehs are in effect taking legal action against the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, in particular the Managing Trustee. From the beginning, Ranade and others have had a confrontational attitude towards the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, as can be seen by Ranade’s earlier letter (for the text of this letter, see this page). The letter accuses the Trustees of “sheer pettiness and foul politicking” – over who gets to occupy a small office.

(It should also be noted that the lies in this “diary” have already been used to call for action against the Sri Aurobindo Ashram by one N. Nandhivarman in his blog. Nandhivarman, a Pondicherry politician who has an extremely hostile attitude towards the Ashram, has repeatedly attacked the Ashram in the past. So the negative effects of this fictional “diary” are already being felt).

Peter Heehs was not named as a respondent in the Writ, even though this is an attempt to have him deported. Such an omission is not accidental – the people bringing the Writ do not want him to be heard, or to participate. (It is ironic that they would omit Heehs, since they are trying to have him deported). Through his lawyer Heehs made a petition of “impleadment” so that he could respond. This was the purpose of the hearing on December 21. The judge accepted Heehs’ petition. (Impleadment means to bring someone who may be liable into a suit, so they may participate). […]

Once again, the author(s) of this fiction are attempting to force the Ashram into a position. By including the statement about “personal animosity,” they are again trying to inflame emotion among those who have already made up their minds that Heehs is a demon and his biography of Sri Aurobindo should be censored. And now, that he should be deported. A serious question should be asked: who is the next person they will decide to harass and attempt to have deported? […]

The truth is that The Lives of Sri Aurobindo has not been “proscribed” anywhere in India except perhaps (and even this is legally doubtful) in the state of Orissa. The order blocking publication is a legal manoeuvre. It mentions only that the book cannot be published until the publisher obtains a “no-objection” from the central Home Ministry. Heehs’ lawyer has asked that this order be lifted. So far the High Court of Orissa has passed no further order on the matter, and this case is pending. There is no “proscription” against it, and certainly not from owning or carrying a copy. In fact many people in Pondicherry and Auroville have a copy, and have read it. It is of course understood that comments or observations will be purely in the enlightened and progressive academic spirit and are not for self-promotion or condemnation. Even while one may substantially differ from an author’s or a commentator’s views, the expression of one’s own views has to be that of a seeker or a promoter of the truth; these should not be reactions.

There is also another alternative to this, in the sense that one can write another independent article or a set of articles in the same seriousness and bring out other aspects in the force and clarity that will enhance our understanding of things, and the Mirror will be quite open to publish it. Discussion of ideas and thoughts and not personalities is what is suggested again. There is no cut-off point, neither in space nor in time, for well-meant comments or observations, but anything that sounds reactionary could be halted. ~RYD

We are keen to debate what Peter Heehs wrote, and why it is banned in India

BREAKING NEWS THAT MEDIA WILL NEVER BREAK
 It is needless to state that ashrams in India are always in the habit of landing themselves in controversies, especially when the founders are no more, those who step into their footsteps cannot win battles within their minds to earthly temptations for power, money and women. In some places more than woman children are at receiving end. This general trend in India is mostly unreported in media, which finds only politicians as villains in real life and exonerate heads of ashrams from their sins on earth as if they have divine license to indulge in such crimes.  DEPORTATION DEMAND IN HIGH COURT
 Mr. Peter Heehs is an American historian living in Pondicherry for more than 35 years and is in charge of Aurobindo Ashram Archives. One bold lady Ms. Sureka Jain had filed a Writ Petition [W.P.24599 of 09] in the High Court of Madras seeking cancellation of his Visa and Deportation to USA. The petitioner’s petition had the Foreigner Regional Registration Officer Chennai and Foreigner Regional Registration Officer Pudducherry as first and second respondent. The third Respondent is the Managing Trustee of Aurobindo Ashram Mr. Manoj Das Gupta and the fourth respondent is Superintendent of Police North Puducherry. Now let us go in the Court and look what happened on 21 st December when the case was heard by the Chief Justice of High Court of Madras. As all reporters of High Court are aware , when the case was taken up lawyers of all parties were present. 
Mr. Peter Heehs in true style of politicians came with 25 or so supporters of him, all being foreigners who had come to express solidarity with him. He alone was allowed to enter the Court room while others were asked by the watch and ward to wait outside. The Secretary of Aurobindo Ashram, Mr. Matriprasad, a Machiavellian manipulator of inside affairs came along with Mr. Peter Heeh’s counsel and Ashram Counsel.
 The counsel of the petitioner, highlighted in the High Court that Mr. Peter Heehs has breached all visa conditions in connivance with the third respondent, namely Managing Trustee of Aurobindo Ashram. The petitioner through her counsel demanded that the first and second respondents should cancel the visa and initiate immediate steps to deport him. The notable plea before the High Court was that the fourth respondent, namely Superintendent of Police North of Puducherry has failed to execute the live arrest warrant pending against Mr.Peter Heehs in Puducherry.
 The counsel representing Mr. Peter Heehs expressed before the Court that Peter Heehs is a world renowned scholar and historian. He further added that for 35 years he had been in Ashram spreading the teachings of Aurobindo Ghosh.

 The counsel of Peter Heehs pointed out that the Managing Trustee of Ashram had praised the invaluable contribution of Mr.Peter Heehs and that he enjoys the total support of the Managing Trustee of Aurobindo Ashram.
 The legal counsel representing Manoj Das Gupta and Aurobindo Ashram Trust said that he was in full agreement with what had been said by the counsel of Mr. Peter Heehs, and the petitioner was motivated by personal animosity towards Peter Heehs as such the petitioner and her complaint had nothing to do with Aurobindo Ashram.
Legal Counsel representing Mr. Peter Heehs declared that the book “The Lives of Sri Aurobindo” is most authentic and academic portrayal of the life of Aurobindo Ghosh that has emerged out of the Ashram and its Archives headed by Mr.Peter Heehs. At this point the Chief Justice was keen to have a copy of the book. To which the legal counsel for Peter Heehs submitted that neither he nor his client were allowed to carry the copy of the book as the book has been proscribed within the territory of India. On hearing this, the Chief Justice sarcastically remarked in that case the book could not be as wonderful as portrayed by the counsel.
 After arguments by both sides the legal counsel for petitioner conveyed strongly that this case was not about the book in any way but was about the breach of visa conditions by Peter Heehs and Manoj Das Gupta.
 The Chief Justice asked the legal counsel of the FRRO authorities their views regarding visa extension and deportation of Peter Heehs. The counsel for FRRO declared that based on documents available to them they were of the view that no further extension of visa of Peter Heehs was possible. But they could not take a decision  his immediate deportation as there were several criminal cases pending against Peter Heehs in Orissa, and as such they would have to take into account before taking action for deportation or cancellation. They prayed for time to study and revert to the court on the matter.
 Then the case was adjourned to January 18th of 2010, on which date respondents were asked to submit written replies.
HEARING OF 19th JANUARY 2010
 Case instead of 18th was taken up on 19th. The legal counsel for petitioner pointed out in strongest terms, that the four respondents have failed so far to give written depositions/submissions to the court regarding specific plaints made by the petitioner. He conveyed to the Court that the four respondents are delaying/avoiding written submissions as their failures are indefensible in the matter. He pleaded to the Court that no further arguments should take place till written are made by the respondents.
 The Chief Justice of Madras High Court ordered that the respondents to give written submissions on next date and posted to 2nd February 2010.
 MY APPEAL TO INDIAN AND INTERNATIONAL JOURNALISTS
 This is a case about an American historian before High Court of Madras . Do you think that only cases involving politicians or film stars are news worthy, and this case should not be reported ?
 The scholar wrote a book which is sold throughout the world, yet in India through Court orders it is banned. DMK, the parent party of Dravida Peravai launched the Right To Free Expression Agitation soon after it was founded by Aringnar Anna. We wanted ban lifted on all of our banned books. In emergency under dynamic leadership of Dr. Kalaignar M. Karunanithi, me and few writers fought in official organs of DMK defending free speech. So we are keen to debate what Peter Heehs wrote, and why it is banned in India.
 At the same time what is happening within Aurobindo Ashram must be reported in media. Ashram has no Guru, hence it is not an Ashram as defined by Philosopher Aurobindo Ghosh. It is a Trust without a President, chair vacant for decades, and with no rules. My petition in local courts to frame proper rules for ashram trust was unnumbered but came up for nearly a decade before local court to die a natural death, hence one cannot pursue an unnumbered case for decade with 4 lawyers getting changed in mid way. The rule of law as it applies to Indian Prime Minister must apply to Trustees of Aurobindo Ashram. If Dr. Karan Singh thinks his clout can cover up, we say that democracy is strong, and everything should be debated in public domain, be it what happens in Courts or closed door meetings.

In the background of the provisions of the constitution and the light shed by judicial precedent, it can at best be said that religion is a matter of faith. It is a matter of belief and doctrine. It concerns the conscience i.e. the spirit of man. It must be capable of overt expressions in work and deed, such as worship or ritual. So religion is a matter of belief and doctrine concerning the human spirit expressed overtly in the form of ritual and worship. Some religions are easily identifiable as religious; some are easily identifiable as not religious. There are many in the penumbral region which instinctively appear to some as religion and to others as not religions. There is no formula of general application. There is no knife-edge test.

Primarily, it is a question of the consciousness of the community, how does the fraternity or sodality (if it is permissible to use the word without confining it to Roman Catholic Groups) regard itself, how do others regard the fraternity or sodality. A host of other circumstances may have to be considered, such as, the origin and the history of the community, the rituals observed by the community, what the founder, if any, taught, what the founder was understood by his followers to have taught, etc. In origin, the founder may not have intended to found any religion at all. He may have merely protested against some rituals and observances, he may have disagreed with the interpretation of some earlier religious tenets. What he said, what he preached and what he taught, his protest, his distant, his disagreement might have developed into a religion in the course of time, even during his life-time.

He may be against religion itself, yet, history and the perception of the community may make a religion out of what was not intended to be a religion and he may be hailed as the founder of a new religion. And, whatever the ordinary features of a religious denomination may be considered to be, all are not of equal importance and surely the common faith of the religious body is more important than the other features… Religious denomination has not to owe allegiance to any parent religion. The entire following of a religion may be no more than the religious denomination. This may particularly be so in the case of small religious groups or 'developing' religions, that is, religions in the formative stage… So Aurobindoism can be termed as a religious denomination. The world and India treated and respected Sri Aurobindo as a religious teacher and the founder of a new religion.

Shri Aurobindo truly was a religious teacher and taught and was understood to have taught new religious doctrine and practice. Therefore, Aurobindoism, can certainly be classified if not as a new religion, as a new sect of Hinduism and the followers of Sri Aurobindo can be termed a religious denomination. Sri Aurobindo of course, disclaimed that he was founding a religion. No great religious teacher ever claimed that he was founding a new religion or a new school of religious thought. The question is not whether Sri Aurobindo refused to claim or denied that he was founding a new religion or a new school of religious thought but whether his disciples and the community thought so. There is no doubt that they did not only his disciples and followers, but religious leaders all the world over and of all faiths. Therefore, Aurobindo Society is a sect of a religious determination within the meaning of the expression in Article 26 of the Constitution… [From Auroville Case: Chinnappa Reddy, J. (Dissenting)]

The Mother’s great grandson Aurofilio


Hi Bappu, Whether someone reads (carefully or casually) or even glances through any piece of writing, it is for that particular person to choose. Such a person may even form an opinion and I have no quarrel with that.

But I would like to only add that if one simply flips through a book (that too one with more than 600 pages) and asserts and imposes an opinion after that flipping through, is it at least possible that the opinion may suffer from being a little too flippant? At least a possibility? …Is there maybe room for an iota of self-doubt?

I am sure that you would have at least for yourself, flipped through Peter’s book before forming an opinion. But I am afraid many may not even have done that before forming their considered opinion. They may have, as you have suggested, followed (alas blindly though!) the footsteps of the people they admire or respect, but in doing so I am afraid that they have clearly displayed their sense of discernment (or the lack of it!).

With regards to other strategies/methods used to analyze Peter’s book, I know of one “critic” who felt uneasy just by looking at the book from a distance…Well that’s some super-natural power that unfortunately I (and I suppose many) don’t posses.

And what about the good old, tried and tested method (adopted by the majority of the civilized world) of reading a book fully before forming and opinion and criticizing it or wanting to ban it? Too old fashioned in this new-age world, led by (pseudo?) scholars (including professors), scientists and gurus?

And what about the opinion of those who HAVE read Peter’s book, the WHOLE book, and who have found it a very good piece of writing? Their opinion means nothing?

And what about the polls (copy attached) that were displayed on the website “thelivesofsriaurobindo.com”, that showed that a majority found the book representative and useful? What about THAT opinion from THE website that has the unique distinction of hosting Peter’s fiercest critics, whose sole purpose in life seems to obsessively hound and pursue Peter till he quits?

Last, but not least, what about something called prejudice? Could that be playing a part (even if very small) in influencing opinion in a little community such as ours that is riddled and rife with rumours and gossip mongering?

Don’t forget that I have grown up here and have lived under the threat of the CIA’s and the Vatican’s (sorry Vetican) attempts to destroy the Ashram, Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. I have looked right into the eyes of under-cover agents and have discovered that the pen can be more dangerous than a sword or gun. But in spite of all that, I have been reminded to listen to the Words of our Masters (instead of those of their self-proclaimed agents) and I hope and believe that I somehow got spared…

The Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo, the Mother and Thea has been relentlessly aimed at dismantling the negative relationship with and view of our material existence – the negative view and experience of our Becoming within the confining framework or womb of time and space. Separately and as a triadic consciousness-force and action in the world these mahayogis have reminded humanity that the Vedic Journey or evolution towards a fully divine material existence is a reality, not a superstition or primitive myth conjured up by primitive people at all, but rather the natural and inevitable unfolding (Becoming) of the One Self of All Selves (the Being).
‘The pure existent is then a fact and no mere concept; it is the fundamental reality. But, let us hasten to add, the movement, the energy, the becoming are also a fact, also a reality. The supreme intuition and its corresponding experience may correct the other, may go beyond, may suspend, but do not abolish it. So [Andrew] Cohen seems to be at least somewhat on the right track in his new teachings, trying to wean people out of a negative relationship with the Becoming; but regrettably nowhere in his talk did he refer to those who have preceded and at least somewhat informed his own conception on the matter. He has paid little true respect to those who through their difficult yoga have made epic, heroic and fruitful efforts towards restoring in our modern times the Vedic conception and consciousness of a divinely intertwined Being and Becoming. Rather when discussing the question of the relationship between Being and Becoming (the Absolute and the Relative), which many have come to think of as somehow separate, he says:
'This teaching I have is really the only, in terms of the enlightenment teachings, is the only clear, unambiguous answer to the question, because as I was saying before, God is Being ... and God is Becoming.'

Nothing belonging to the Old Story can be a spring-board to jump into the New One

PORTRAITS, RELICS AND MEDICAMENTS

May be it’s good to remember, about Mother’s and Sri Aurobindo’s portraits, that also if the Mother knew very well the need for many sadhaks of keeping some of these portraits at home as a help for their personal sadhana, she never encouraged an exhibition of the same portraits in public places. Why? Because such exhibition, like every other exhibition of portraits of saints or “realized” people all over the world, can only invite the sadhak or the believer to “adore” or to depend on the “embodied being” there represented, to ask him for some miracle. In other words, that would help the Old Story to continue, with its religious way of approaching the Divine. When Sri Aurobindo and the Mother came for a completely New Story.
It’s much easier to adore than to transform oneself, we know that. But when our mind is at the command of our being, i.e. when there is separation (from our Source, the Divine inside), the inevitable result is exactly that: the need to address something outside which could help us. And everything – everything – can help us if we trust it. But only to a certain point. The same point which the Old World is still stranded in and doesn’t want to give up. The point from which Sri Aurobindo’s integral yoga starts. Just at the end of all the other previous attempts – and realizations too.
(By the way, there is a strong movement in these days in Italy to remove the traditional Crucified hung in public places like school-rooms, tribunals, etc. - not bakeries anyway.)
Of course, to address a familiar Mother’s portrait for our peace is one thing, and to contact the Transcendent’s Power (the “Divine Mother”) inside ourselves and let it work is another one. If the first attitude belongs to the Old Story, the second one requires a transcendence of all the three traditional Yogas - karma, bhakti and Jnana -, where separation is still there.
We have to realize that nothing belonging to the Old Story can be a spring-board to jump into the New One. And until we resort to old means we delay endlessly the beginning of the New Story, which starts by a quantum leap integrating all the previous three yogas in something else. Something requiring a deeper surrender to the Now (whatever it can be), only possible if our psychic being is at the command of our being, when we fully inhabit our body (something that the mind cannot catch at all, as it needs always to grasp something outside). Only then transformation can start – and, step by step, can last, because our matter, at the end, is touched, as there is no more separation. This is the “miracle” which has to become “a common act”, as Sri Aurobindo wrote in Savitri.
What before we were believing in as a miracle, was only magic. And magic cannot really change our Matter, because it cannot unroot the problem. It can only feed magicians, priests or witches. Behind separation, in fact, there is always an ego (also a spiritual one) – with its interest on some power (“I don’t hold powers” was saying the Mother, who was the last iconoclast, a living example of perfect surrender to Divine Will).
Whenever we resort to something outside for our healing, we resort to magic. (We can remember here how the hint given by Christ to his disciples to make them to get a glimpse of the Consciousness of Unity in Multiplicity was inevitably translated by human mind into a cannibalistic ritual). So, it’s just a matter of good taste not to mix in such a process of magic the relics of somebody who spent his/her life for something else. To label some manufactured articles with the name of Auroville, or to distribute them officially in Auroville because they are “sanctified” or “charged” by those relics, would mean only to degrade the Town of the Future by pointing out to the world that Auroville has missed the point.
 “And above all, don’t make a religion” (the Mother).

Mr. Tusar,
I am in Italy now but I have known that you published my article ("Portraits, relics and medicaments") in your website. Unfortunately, you published the version already published by Deshpande in his review, that is a version which is not the integral one (that you can find here attached).
I would like to underline that this article was meant for Auroville, as I wrote it because of something wretched happening there in these last times: the more or less "official" distribution of "medicaments" manufactured with relics of the Mother and Sri Aurobindo (!).
So, if all reference to that specific issue is suppressed, the same article cannot really stand and lends itself to useless comments by readers who are unaware of all that.

Dear Tusar,
it was not my intention, with my article, to convince anybody. I don't need to convince anybody. Each one is FREE to experience what he needs to experience, religion or not religion. But as an Aurovilian (and my article was meant for Auroville), I needed and I had to express my feelings towards an "expedient" using Auroville for something not belonging to Auroville's spirit - which is open to every new experience, i.e. every experience not repeating the past. That's all.

You are free not to catch the discrepancy of the "expedient" in question, but I am free to feel it and to express it.
